Root Canal Therapy in Springfield, MO

Root Canal Therapy in Springfield, MO

The root canal is the portion inside a tooth containing the blood vessels and nerves that nourish the teeth and supply moisture to the surrounding tissues. Any damage to the root canals obstructs the normal functioning of the teeth.

Root canal treatment is an endodontic therapy - treatment taking place inside the teeth that removes dead and damaged dental pulp from within allowing the tooth to remain in place.

Why Would You Need Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy is performed due to trauma, decay, or infection and as a result, the tender pulp tissues are injured, swollen, and often painful. The pulp is damaged due to the following factors:

  • Tooth decay due to a deep cavity
  • A chip or crack in the teeth due to injury
  • Infected pulp or root tip

If left untreated for long, the bacteria causing contamination of the pulp tissues can result in bone loss and eventually loss of teeth itself.

Signs and Symptoms of Infection

  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
  • Random pain and/or pain on biting
  • Inflamed and tender gums
  • Darkening of gums and severe pain during biting and chewing food

What Are the Steps in Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal treatment is performed in three steps:

X-rays: We will take a dental X-ray to have a clear image of the range of damage.

Anesthetic: Local anesthesia is administered before the treatment, and the tooth is isolated to protect the tooth and obtain the best results.

Pulp removal: We will then make a small opening in the top of the tooth and remove the damaged pulp and tissues using small dental files.

Cleaning: The root canal is cleaned and flushed before being reshaped for better filling.

Dental Filling: A sealing paste and a rubber material are placed in the canals followed by a dental filling to close the small hole. A porcelain crown is then placed on the tooth to protect it from future damage and restore its appearance.

Temporary Fillings: If the tooth cannot be restored the same day that the root canal is performed due to the amount of infection or if it is done by a root canal specialist, a soft, temporary filling is placed to protect the opening from saliva and microorganisms.

Taking Care After the Treatment

  • Before the procedure is complete, the tooth should not be used for chewing or biting food
  • Avoid food containing excess sugar
  • A soft bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste are to be used.
